REMINDER for Motor Carriers:  Required Reefer Processes at NIT
The VPA has issued the following:

Motor Carrier Partners,

Refrigerated, or reefer, cargoes are a fast-growing market segment at The Port of Virginia. Thank you for your support and partnership as we collectively pursue expanded reefer opportunities.

This message is intended as a reminder for those drivers delivering export reefer loads to Norfolk International Terminals (NIT).

Please be advised of the following requirement, regarding temperature checks:

  • Upon receiving a route ticket (sample image below – red box), drivers should proceed to the 410 row (RSA) to conduct a temperature check with a reefer mechanic
    • This instruction applies regardless of whether the reefer load is ultimately destined to NIT North or South
    • All export reefers arriving at NIT must undergo a temperature check

  • Please note that upon entry to the terminal with a reefer load, the truck’s license plate will be flagged with a temperature check hold
    • The hold will prevent drivers from exiting the terminal until a temperature check is performed

Virginia International Gateway (VIG) and NIT are in alignment, regarding this policy.
