CHESAPEAKE–The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin the I-64 West High Rise Bridge waterproofing and deck repair project on Monday, July 25. Motorists can expect weeknight single-lane closures as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, heading from Chesapeake to Virginia Beach.

Crews will first patch the existing concrete bridge deck, then place an epoxy overlay on the westbound lanes of the I-64 High Rise Bridge. The epoxy-based material prevents excessive water from seeping into the roadway, which through expansion and contraction during hot and cold temperatures, can cause potholes or pooling. Additional repairs to the steel superstructure are also a part of this project.

Crews will be working for the rest of this year as temperatures allow. The project’s contract completion date is January 2018. Similar work was completed on the eastbound lanes in 2012.

Motorists are encouraged to call 511 or the Traffic Information Line at 757-361-3016, visit, or listen to Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) 1680 AM for current traffic and travel information.
