ERC’s Midtown Tunnel 5K Run – Aug. 27 (impacts at PMT, POC)

Port Partners,

On Saturday morning, August 27, Elizabeth River Crossings (ERC) will host the “Midtown Tunnel 5K Run/Walk” – ERC’s Facebook Page for the Race

The race is scheduled from 7:30 – 9:30 a.m., with racers arriving and departing before and after those times.

We expect to see heavy vehicular traffic that morning in proximity to the Portsmouth Operations Center (POC), next door to the ERC offices at 152 Tunnel Facility Road (or Drive). In the spirit of helpfulness and stewardship, we are providing race parking in the lot that serves the POC. Personal vehicles, associated with the race, may also be parked along the shoulders of Tunnel Facility Road.

As you can see in the attached image, the race route necessitates the closure of PMT’s POV gate on the morning of August 27. If you will be entering/exiting PMT in a personal vehicle between the hours of 5:30 – 10:00 a.m. on that date, please proceed through the main truck interchange, using the far right lane. Our Port Police and TSU colleagues are aware of this temporary accommodation, and will be available to assist with on-terminal directions and parking instructions.

If you are a truck driving partner, and will be conducting business at the PPCY on the morning of the 27th, mindfulness and caution are key. While operations will be business as usual at the PPCY, Tunnel Facility Road will remain closed to vehicular traffic. You may also notice, and should be prepared for, an increase in traffic in the area. The traffic should be heaviest in proximity to the PPCY’s westernmost exit, where Railroad Ave. connects with Tunnel Facility Road.

The Midtown Tunnel will also be CLOSED WESTBOUND, Norfolk to Portsmouth, from 5:30-10:00 a.m. on August 27, allowing racers to run through the new tunnel tube. The Tunnel will remain open for eastbound traffic, Portsmouth to Norfolk. However, at the conclusion of the race, the westbound tunnel will reopen while the eastbound tunnel will close for the remainder of the weekend, until 5:00 a.m. Monday, August 22.

Any questions regarding the particulars of the race, and the associated road closures, should be directed to Ryan McLane – Elizabeth River Crossings – 757-618-7597.
